India revisited

Here is a short <YouTube> from a film school in India.  The Hindi lyrics to the background music translate:  LOOK HOW YOU LOOK WHEN YOU’RE LOOKING AT ME.

In watching the YouTube video, I was struck by both sides’ passivity.  I wanted the demure woman on the subway to look directly and point her finger at the leering man sitting across from her and loudly say, “Got a problem?”  I may travel far and wide, but my New England mill town perspective stays ever with me.  As I write that, I realize that—wanting to shake someone and say speak up—is a common sensation I get when in India; I get frustrated trying to communicate with eyes.  I can’t do telepathy and I’m not all that proficient in eye talk.  There is a time and place for every thing.  But if I am ordering a cup of tea, I consider an eye response inappropriate.  And the guy on the subway was obviously being rude.  I’m glad the book started well for you.

Happy New Year!  The colorful parade (full of puppets, stilt walkers, clowns, musicians, dancers and dragons) and the incredible fireworks at Boston’s First Night celebration were the final act of one great mayor.  Mayor Menino is going out Boston Strong.
