Dancing in the Streets

Among the many colorful and provocative sights in Mexico City, one of my favorites is the colorful dance troupes, depicting Aztec traditional dance. Or as a sceptic mumbled, how do they know the ancient Aztecs danced like that? It’s a colorful, stylistic dance.

Completely entranced, I would watch these dancers twirl and jump and methodically step to the drum beat. To me, it is though the paintings in museums have come to life. The costumes, elaborate and loud, made me realize I wasn’t in Kansas anymore.

More than traditional buskers, there is definitely a spiritual aspect in these dances. If you get there at the beginning, you can watch a ritual blessing, offered in all four directions.

I felt blessed each time I came upon a new troupe.

The debate over whether Aztec song and dance survived the Spanish Conquest continues. To me, it’s more a question of relativity.
