Viva Las Vegas

Las VegasWhy did I put Las Vegas on my USA recommended itinerary? It’s a fun place with a lot to entertain the visitor and it’s unique for the USA. On the strip, you can take a wander through the many posh gambling arcades, take a shot at video poker, watch a sidewalk encounter between a pirate ship and a ship of the Queen’s Navy. You can walk in an outdoor garden amongst flamingos or watch the choreographed fountain display on the hour set to music. You can take in a magic show or the type of show of your choice.

If you want to step off the strip, there is the Holiday Inn with its Star Trek odyssey ride. Circus Circus presents free circus acts. Just a block off the strip you can find some good deals at Black Jack tables (buy $20 worth of chips and see how long you can make them last) or at counters with those 99 cent shrimp cocktails and 99 cent Daiquiris. Las Vegas is packed with people. You don’t have to spend money to roam the casinos admiring the buildings and watching the people and taking in the free entertainment. But you can splurge on the live shows. I like the magic shows! If you can refrain from being judgmental, you are sure to have a blast.

If you have a car, you can mix it up even more. There is the Nevada State Museum waiting for you to wander in. There are also some older casinos in the city center.  There is a Liberace Museum and an Elvis Presley Chapel. The nearby Hoover Damn and Lake Meade can help diversify the stop. You can spend a morning exploring the Hoover Damn, a major tourist attraction, and then take a walk around Lake Meade, the largest reservoir in the USA. If you too have six weeks in the USA, I recommend you check out Las Vegas.

“Las Vegas exists chiefly to satisfy the needs and desires of its visitors, and this it does in spectacular fashion. Sin City has taken or re-created the best that other great cities have to offer and then upped the ante — making it bigger, grander, flashier.”  —SCOTT DOGGETT, Lonely Planet Las Vegas
