Pandemic, 2nd quarter

Life is good. I am not on the road like last year. Mostly, now I travel as a pedestrian along parks and trails. All this staying at home and self-isolation has changed the lens from which I’m looking at travel. I take my car out of the garage once a week for what now feels like my safari around the grocery store. A summer jaunt to get an ice cream cone at my favorite homemade ice cream shop feels like an adventure. Humans are adaptable and hopeful and we need to feel joy. A travel addict can’t live on hold forever. Lawn darts or bocce can change the way I see my backyard.

Looking at life from a different angle

Though a Weekend Warrior of old, I find thankfulness is much stronger than any sense of deprivation. I marvel at my good fortune in this world to have a car and a back yard. I am thankful some people check in and Zoom with me. Without an open gym, flab and extra weight are challenges but I figure they keep me humble. Daily walking can be the only reason my clothes still fit! I have so much extra time to bake muffins and pies and make waffles and lasagne. But even that has become less of a novelty so I do less of it. In this stationary world, I listen to audio books and take on home maintenance projects.

I am thankful that I am a New Englander amongst public parks and trails. The flowers are blooming. The tomato plants are showing promise. The strawberries are finally ripe. The only Confederate States of America monument in Massachusetts (a plaque to Confederate Officers who died at a Civil War fort on George’s Island) was covered and then removed years back. Most people are courteous enough to wear masks if they are out in public places where there are other people.  Some States and municipalities are redistributing their budgets to target better police training. I am hopeful that people who believe in free and fair elections prevail and States disavow the obstruction of the polls.

Kicking back

Travel helps me keep my edge. In 2020, I’m feeling like I’ve lost it and can’t be bothered to look for it. I just want to stay calm and distant and healthy in these Covid 19 times.

“I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.” —Audrey Hepburn
