Jantar Mantar

In the Indian State of Rajasthan, sets the Amber Palace next to the City of Jaipur.   In the 1700s, a local prince constructed this palace with huge architectural astronomical instruments, referred to as the Jantar Mantar.

According to Wikipedia, it features the world’s largest stone sundial and has instruments that allow the observation of “astronomical positions” with the naked eye! The science was a bit over my head, but the scale of the instruments was impressive, like a giant’s sculpture garden.

Each of its more than a dozen structures is said to have a specialized astronomical function including: the measurement of time, the prediction of eclipses, and the tracking of stars. It left me feeling humbled. These are a few photos of this UNESCO site.
