Mystic CT weekend

As summer approaches, what about a weekend trip to Mystic, Connecticut?

When I’m looking for R&R, I like a road like Route 1 or Route 1A.  Route 1 goes all along the USA’s east coast from Maine to Florida.  I recommend New England’s Route 1 if you want to putter along and appreciate the journey. Traveling along Route 1, you will come to Mystic when driving in Connecticut.  Mystic is a fine summertime destination.

I highly recommend the Mystic Aquarium.  The live coral, the outdoor penguins and the pool shows are my favorites.

The Mystic Art Museum has changing exhibits of New England artists on offer.

You could take a harbor boat tour, lasting 90 minutes, on the Mystic Express.

The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center is a place for some quick nature walks. With all the private greenery around, it’s good to have a place where you can actually get out of the car and get up close and personal with  the outdoors. (This is in vicinity of aquarium)

A big tourist draw is the Mystic Seaport.  I wouldn’t go again but most people speak highly of it. You can see what a village along the harbor would have been like in the 1800s and tour an authentic whaler. (I think it’s a bit pricey for what you get.)

A half hour drive away from Mystic is the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, run by Foxwoods and located in Mashantucket.  I spent a day there and highly recommend this top notch museum.

Other fun summer destinations in New England might be Cape Cod or Newport or a trip on a windjammer or (could that be right?) Lowell.  If you plan to take a book, you are welcome to consider my summer reading list.
